I’m still trying to figure out why this is happening and what the ultimate fix should be, but in the meantime I have determined several different ways that you can fix this by yourself. ![]() The update contains a newer version of d2d1.dll (Direct2D) and dwrite.dll (DirectWrite), but for some reason only the newer version of d2d1.dll is being loaded by Paint.NET. The update in question is KB2505438, “Slow performance in applications that use the DirectWrite API on a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2.” These are actually caused by the same thing, which is a recent Windows Update that went out affecting Direct2D and DirectWrite. Fixed an issue that prevented the 4.0.1 from installing on top of 4.0 when using the MSI (e.g.I’ve been getting numerous crash reports that Paint.NET’s text tool does not work, or that the font list only includes a few usable fonts.Fixed a performance issue that caused images with many layers (50+) to take a VERY long time to open, close, or even switch away from (regression from 3.5).Fixed the language setting in the Settings dialog not always allowing you to set it to English if your system's default language is non-English.Fixed a keyboard tabbing issue in the Resize dialog (regression from 3.5).Paint Bucket tool's hatch fill modes weren't working with the Overwrite blending mode (regression from 3.5).Move Selected Pixels now lets you hold Control to leave a copy of the selected area behind on the initial move (regression from 3.5).Gradient tool now lets you reverse a transparency gradient by clicking the right mouse button on one of the handles (regression from 3.5).Colors window now correctly lets you paste a hex color value that starts with a hash, e.g.Fixed the gamma and contrast for text rendering on some systems where the wrong values were being used ("rainbow" text).VMM: improve MSI handling under rare circumstances (only relevant for the ICH9 chipset).VMM: more fixes for MSR emulation on certain hardware (bugs #12784, #12949, #13034).You can also convert an image to black and white, or sepia.
